I've been working at a regional now for several years but my dream job has always been to fly at UPS, I was wondering if I could get a job with Polar or Atlas for a few years before interviewing at UPS, would that help my chances because of the international long-haul expierience?

The thing about that is when you fly for say polar they PIC type you in the 747 for operational necessasity even though you will be right seat for several years. That combined with the international experience has got to improve your chances, but I wouldn't set yourself up for disapointment. Everyone knows a great pilot turned down at a great airline while some Jackazz got hired. I think polar would be a place a guy could set some roots and stay awhile if things went south. Just my 2 cents.

I interviewed with Atlas-Polar on 25 Oct 07 and was offered employment with Atlas for a 7 Jan 08 class date on the 747-400 out of Stansted, England. When I interviewed with them there were 11 candidates. I am a military (USMC) pilot (AV-8B/C-9B). My total flight time is 5782 hrs. Most of the folks in the class I interviewed with had roughly the same if not more flight time than that. Atlas-Polar have a fleet of (38) 747 aircraft. They are the largest operator of 747 aircraft in the world. They are getting the 14 new 747-8F aircraft (16% larger than a 747-400 and 16% more fuel efficient) in the next 2 years with options for 14 more from Boeing. The company pays $75.00/hr plus 58.00 day per diem to start. Upgrade time to Capt is 4 years and Capt start out making $149/hr and go to $189/hr. The down side is 19-21 day trips. The company has a bright future and with the growth of the freight industry it will be a stable job for years to come (my opinion). Hope this lends you some information and insight on Atlas-Polar. Both companies are owned by AAWW (Atlas Air World Wide Holdings). Go up to their website and read the section labeled investor relations and read the annual report. Good luck.

Polar and Atlas typically hire FOs. The pilot groups are seperate for now, Polar has the more friendly pilot contract. If the two companies merge, hopefully it is the Polar work rules with Atlas pay. Many people do use Polar and Atlas for a stepping stone. However, it is not a bad place to be other than the labor issues. There are different opinions to which direction the company is heading, not sure what the game plan or if there is one. DHL has a 20 year contract with Polar, but Atlas wants its share.
The quality of life at Polar is good for the pilots, they dropped us down from 12 planes to 7, not sure if we will see 12 again. For now, it would be a perfect stepping stone.....if you have turbine PIC from a regional go over to Atlas or Polar
