I was curious if anyone knew if Airnet was still operating their second in command program? There web site says that they still have it, but with all that is going on in the airline/flying jobs today I wasn't sure if they had cancelled this program.

I think they have an 800 number that you can call with the most up to date info. check on their website.

still in operation. have a co-worker who just took a position w/them. you will be considered a "scab." the pay is also preaty low. but the experience is worth it if you can afford to eat ramen noodles for the next year.

morri7bf: I think your hunch is correct. I got the word directly from Craig Washka Thursday that, "Hiring is slow here right now," and, "looking at pilots with PIC mins until things pick up." I'm caught in a situation where I could use that program, too.

mshunter: Your friend may have gotten one of the last SIC positions. But I don't understand why you would be "considered a 'scab.'" Can you elaborate a bit?

most airnet pilots consider an sic position in a single pilot airplane a "scab." they are there to observe and build the time they need. I was talking to an airnet pilot a few months back, and he was flying one of their barons. i had heard they were single pilot, and when two pilots steped out i got curious. i was told by the PIC that he was an SIC "scab." they work the regs to make someone able to log SIC in a single pilot airplane. and with the pay, you are basically a voluntier. i say good for airnet. they are a buisness, and have found a way to make it work for them.

as far as the scab thing goes, i felt like punching the PIC in the face. we are all supposed to stick together in this game, and his poor attitude made me loose all respect for him. we are an elite group of people in my opnion, with a very special skill set. we need to be friendly to all to keep a good view of us to the public. and representing a budding pilot as a "scab" show a bad attitude with and un-professional demeanor.

I was a former star checker, and so was my best friend...in fact he was an sic in their program. Nobody will think of you as a scab, as the term doesn't even apply to the condition. The pay is low, but you are not even required to be there, why should they pay you at all? Its still better than some regional starting pay. Also you aren't logging SIC unless certain specific conditions are present. You log just total time when you aren't flying and PIC when you are flying.

On another note, Id say airnet is going down the pipes pretty fast as they just layed off 60 pilots or so. Go fly ameriflight or something.

You are absolutely correct, I believe a "scab" is someone who crosses the picket line. Certainly not some kid trying to build some time. The guy you spoke with was most definitely mistaken. I use to fly with some of those time builders at an outfit based in dallas, and if anything it is a great experience for them and someone to keep you awake on those long nights hauling the checks!

i have a feeling the man i spoke to was a bitter person. i have also had a conversation with an ameriflight pilot who just seemed bitter. but it still hasent made me want to not try out there style of flying. single pilot in the soup get my heart going.
