All,
I am still seriously thinking about taking flying lessons, but still in the Active Army. I am working on my BS in Human Resource Management and should have that within a year or so.
I am still wanting to learn how to fly! Does anyone know approx. how much of flight school the VA will actually pay??
thank you.
David

Hi david,
I was active duty Marine Corps so I understand wanting to use your GI benefits to pay for training! The VA's stance has been that they will pay up to 60% of your flight training in an approved 141 program, however this does NOT include your private pilot's license (PPL)! So for your PPL you will have to pay out of pocket or get a loan for that training. Be aware that they will only pay for 60% of the hours that are outlined on the syllabus, anything extra that you may need or want will come out of your pocket! You can also use those benefits to cover the costs of checkrides and written tests (again, not for the PPL).
I decided against using my GI Bill for flight training and instead plan on either using it to get my A&P or to get a Masters. Also there are many good part 61 schools out there, however you can't use your GI Bill for them, except for the the FAA exams, since those are standard. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Hello,
Ok, there are a few flight schools that you can get your PPL to CFII and that is paid 100% using your Chapter 33 Post 9-11 GI bill. I know because I am using this program. I started last September 2010 and I am now almost done with my commercial and working on my CFI, and best of all the GI bill has paid 100% for flight training(except books, charts, supplies, insurance exe...)They also have for Rotor wing as well. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and the school is Salt Lake Community College (slcc.edu) and they are partners with Cornerstone Aviation (cornerstoneaviation.com). You have to be degree seeking, enrolled in 12 credit hours to receive 100% monthly housing stipend that is around $1100, and when your done you will have an AS degree. Also you have to deal with allot of BS but when your getting 100,000$ in flight training you deal with it.
If you have any questions let me know. I think they even have housing available. I believe there are a few people that moved from out of state just for the program.
Take care and good luck
