I am in the military with a Warrant Officer School, followed by Initial Entry Rotary Wing school date right after in June of 2010. I currently have 100 hours with ASEL and AMEL private ratings, and am in the ATP fast track program to gain ratings to include: Instrument, Commercial, CFI, CFII, and MEI. Upon completion I will have 260 hours with all the above endorsements, as well as 150 hours multi-engine. I want to work for an airline, and am wondering if the rotary wing in the military will help me. I know it will add to my total time, adding about 185 more hours while in Ft. Rucker, however I know that I will not have enough hours in fixed wing now rotary wing to be able to land a commercial job. I am in need of advice to help me accomplish my dream of working for an airline, and searching for the best track to get there. I know this thread, question, is long, but anything that can be offered will be much appreciated.

Wow, sounds like you have landed yourself a great program. You will come out with a bunch of ratings to get you started. You have a great question. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to say how hiring will go when it starts to pick up again, but you can be sure it will be competitive. If you truly want to be an airline pilot then I would focus on building up your fixed wing time. Once you get out, you will most likely need to land a either teaching, flying cargo or some other commercial endeavor to built up more time. The old minimums use to be 1000 Total and 200 Multi to land a job flying for the regional airlines. What they will start at the next round of hiring is difficult to say. Although you will complete your training with about 260 hours and all your ratings you will need to build up time. I would try and grab as much fixed wing and multi fixed wing time you can. The rotary wing will help show you are versatile and will separate you from your peers on an interview. Good luck and have fun in the program. When you get done you will have enough ratings to pick how you want to build up your time.
