A college degree is still a requirement for most major airlines. There is no question that Universities that have aviation degrees make great pilots. I do however agree completely that a well rounded pilot with other backgrounds and non-aviation degrees make great pilots as well. I would argue that having a non aviation degree or non aviation work experience can significantly help you during the peaks and valleys of your aviation career. The old expression is you are not a real pilot until you have been furloughed at least once. Whether you decided to work at a corporate job or an airline job you are likely to find yourself between jobs at some point in your career. Having another means to support yourself will go a long way to make your life smoother.
This is a quick story for you. I was jump seating on American Airlines a while back and talking to the pilots while in the jumpseat. I was in full uniform and they asked me what I did for a living. I was really confused since they saw my id and I was in a uniform. The captain went on to explain that they were both TWA Captains and were slowly being phased out. The FO had just been demoted to FO from Captain last month and would be on the street in 4 months. The Captain explained he was 3 months away from FO and then another 4 months away from the street. He went on to explain that they both had side business so they were going to be okay. One had a flooring business and the other had a furniture restoration business. After his explanation he turned to me and again said “son what do you do for a living”. I got the message pretty quickly.
