I always worked from 1972 until 2009. Then my 135 job went out of business. I decided to use this time to do those things I never had time to do when flying. I got a physical and found that my PSA was 8.5. Had a biopsy and found cancer. I had surgery and found that some cells may have escaped the prostate so I had to have radiation. The whole thing is a long process so I've now been out of work for a year and a half. Now back in the job hunt with a long gap in my employment history. First how do I put that on a resume? Second should I mention to an employer that I had cancer? Will that rule me out for employment right away? I haven't done anything aviation related in that time but I've done some odd jobs and some volunteer work.

Tough question. I guess my first question is do you have your medical back? I am of the school of thought of being honest. It is so much easier to just be up front and explain the cancer and move on. You have so they should too. Otherwise you are always going to be afraid you may slip and let it out. Because you were hiding it would imply it was more significant. With regard to the gap in you work you were looking and pursuing other interest. I would include the other stuff you did on your resume. As long as you explain what you were doing and you are current and qualified you should be fine. Feel free to shoot me your resume and I can have a look at it for you.
