Dear Counselor,
I have been unemployed since May of 2009. I lost my job with a Regional Airline shortly after the Colgan accident and after a second attempt at an upgrade. My first attempt was back in 2007, after not being signed off for the checkride due to an unsat FMS exercise. My partner had been fired and rehired just before our sim sessions began and lost his job in 2008.
My second attempt began a few months after Colgan flight 3407 crashed. 10 people attempted the upgrade, 4 passed. 7 of the 10 had previously attempted. For 3 it was their first time. All, except 1, with a previous attempt, failed. I had almost 4000 hours on the aircraft. And everybody back at the company were shocked to hear what had happened to me. I was given 24 hours in which to decide whether to I wanted to resign or be fired..I took the resignation.
Since then, it has become common knowledge that I had been caught up in politics and a knee-jerk sanitation policy because of Colgan. Since September 2010 I have been to 4 interviews and not gotten one offer, despite the fact that I am current and have more experience than most. I know why I'm not getting hired, it's obvious, but how can I get ahead? What can I do to get a job again? When I interview, I never mention that I was caught in a crossfire to get rid of my partner, I never mention I and 5 others lost our jobs because of the Colgan politics. I own what I did wrong in the simulator and I always reiterate that I loved working at my previous airline. But nothing works.
Will I have a career in an airline ever again?

I would like to say you will but it is a tough road. It is hard to get back in after you have been out. If you are really determined to get back then keep trying. You may have to take a job that is a little below your level just to get back in the system. Once in and flying again you can then freely start interviewing elsewhere. We offer Interview prep with Mock interviews. We can help work on your interview skills and make sure you are putting your best image out there.
