Hello!
I'm an active member at another forum for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (nurse-anesthesia.org). We are one of the two major providers of anesthesia in the United States, along with our physician counterparts.
Recently, our certifying body has decided to require a recertification exam for practicing CRNAs every 8 years. This has caused quite a bit of controversy, and I'm hoping that some pilots could give some insight.
In our circles, anesthesia is often compared to flight, as the two most difficult parts induction and emergence from anesthesia are compared with take-off and landing in flight. Also, many of the safety precautions we take in anesthesia were inspired by the pilot profession. This is part of the reason anesthesia has become remarkably safe over the past 25 years.
My question is this: what type of recertification requirements exist for pilots? Do you need to do "CEU"s or Con. Ed. Credits of any kind? Is there a written/knowledge examination you must take? What about practical skills?
Thanks very much for your time.
