Bill, don't limit yourself to staying in the ABQ area for a flying job ................. most of us had to leave town to get the jobs we needed to advance in our careers ! Your time and experience is marketable but you have to be looking "on the other side of the fence" in order to land a good job for yourself. It is all stepping stones to the better jobs ! Don't stay in any one job for too long, get your experience, work hard for them, then leave for greener pastures. I am from the SouthWest myself and I would have liked to been able to stay there for a flying career but it does not work that way all the time. Depends on what you expect and where you are willing to go ! Make those all important CONTACTS and NETWORK feverishly, it will pay off. People that KNOW YOU and LIKE YOU will HIRE YOU !!!
GOOD LUCK, GRASSHOPPER !!! -

Hey Man, try to get a job at FedEx throwing boxes or doing some other part time permanent or full time permanent job, this will give you the chance to get an interview there WHEN they start hiring again ................. you will be required to stay with whatever job you take there for a defined period of time, then you are free to apply to the Line haul side, it all depends on your Manager where you work, when you can be released out of your department, to the Line haul side (Cargo). I know lots of others that have gone this route to the Line Haul and they made it.
No one is going to tell you about this, and you can also apply this rule to other companies ............... if you get inside with working for them, you are generally given the benefit of an interview before anyone on the outside who is applying for the same job !!! GOOD LUCK, GRASSHOPPER !!! -
In Topic: Military route or a 2 yr flight school?

The ACTIVE DUTY Military is an excellent way to get flight training and other benefits, but they want you for a long time. You also may not be flying the entire time you are in the Military, depending on where you are in the food chain and what your specific aircraft mission is.
I would submit that you weigh the possibility of being "owned by Uncle Sam" for a long time or you could pursue the Civilian route and at least have the flexibility when a job opportunity comes along to take that job. Also, another very good option instead of going Active Duty Military, is to get into the AIR NATIONAL GUARD (U.S. AIRFORCE COMPONENT) this is a good way to get Military training while you belong to them on a "part-time" basis .............. you are able to pursue your other civilian duties and get the benefit of Military training, at the same time !!!
This is a "best kept secret" as no one is going to tell you much about it unless you check into it for yourself. I fly with lots of other Pilots that have gone the AIR NATIONAL GUARD route, and they enjoyed the military training and civilian status at the same time.
You will have to start out in the Unit as ENLISTED, this is basically a "look and see" towards you, then if you prove yourself to the Unit, better things will come along for you !!! CHECK OUT THE AIR NATIONAL GUARD units in your area, or region. GOOD LUCK, GRASSHOPPER !!!
