Not sure how to answer this

My last contract position was on a rotational basis. The rotation schedule was a set number of days on and off and then home-while home you are not paid obviously. Our rotation period at home was changed with nearly no notice (we were told this a few days prior to going home)and my time at home was going to be extended by an additional 2 months beyond what was the norm. I had budgeted for what we were told would be the time at home, but this extension would cause me to be without a paycheck for those 2 additional months. I felt it best to move on and find employment as I couldn't survive for 2 months without a paycheck. How do I explain this in my future interviews? I have run this by friends and the advice is to not say this. Their concern is that this could look bad, as a complaint against the company and potential employers are probably going to side with my former company.
My opinion is that I have every right to say what happened. I loved the job. But my financial obligations don't wait for anything and I could not sit around with no paycheck coming in.
